Inhofe Calls for Renewed Commitment to National Defense on Anniversary of 9/11

Statement

U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC), today released a statement remembering the men and women who lost their lives during the September 11 attacks in 2001 and 2012 and to honor those who continue to fight the War on Terror:

"The terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, forever changed America. On this day each year, we remember the more than 3,000 innocent American lives lost at the hands of terrorists and the selflessness of first responders and volunteers that ran into the rubble. It's because of them that we are also reminded our nation must remain vigilant in preventing another evil atrocity against our nation. Many service men and women have since answered the call to defend our nation and promote freedom. We owe a great deal to their commitment, courage and sacrifice. For more than a decade, they have successfully fought an enemy that celebrates mass murder, rewards robbery of innocent lives and lacks remorse. In return, Americans have been able to live their lives with a renewed sense of safety and security. Then on Sept. 11, 2012, we were shaken again when terrorists murdered four American heroes at a U.S. consulate in Libya. This anniversary attack sent a reminder that the war on terror was not coming to an end despite what was promised on campaign trails. Today, not only are terrorists still working to destroy America, but they are seeking destruction of anyone that does not align with their radical worldviews, as seen with ISIS's mass execution of religious minority groups in the Middle East.

"This Sept. 11, our country must renew its commitment to our nation's military and to rebuilding a strong national defense. We face an increasingly dangerous and unpredictable world between the growing stronghold of terrorism throughout the Middle East and Africa, the threat of Iran gaining a nuclear weapon and means to launch it, and an America that is being disarmed by the current administration's spending priorities. While our military will answer when called upon, despite its readiness level, it's time we provide them with the training and resources that this unstable world demands. It's time we show our military that their commitment to our freedom and our safety is valued, recognized and respected, and we show the world that peace and stability can return when America steps back onto the global stage of leading through strength."
